Hello Student and Parents/Guardians of WANIC Dental Careers
Welcome to WANIC Skill Center! The first day of school is Tuesday, September 6th.
This is the first of two welcome letters. We will send another at the end of August with additional information and forms. Please read through both emails carefully and let us know if you have any questions. Contact the WANIC office at wanic@lwsd.org or (425) 739-8400. Always include the student’s FULL NAME when communicating with us.
THE WANIC WAY:
One of WANIC’s primary goals is to prepare students for post-secondary education or a rewarding career in any field. We value, model, and teach skills that set students up to be successful, respected, and confident members of society during high school and beyond. WANIC faculty and staff devote their time and energy into cultivating a culture of mutual respect, safety and inclusivity, positive social behavior, and high academic standards.
We call this the WANIC Way.
The WANIC Way emphasizes attitude, reliability, professionalism, initiative, respect, and integrity. At the forefront is the value we place on students showing up every day, on time, prepared to participate in class, contribute to a positive culture, and ready to reap the rewards of personal growth, academic achievement, and a sense of accomplishment.
Be Safe. Be Responsible. Be Respectful. Be Present.
COVID CONSIDERATIONS:
All classes will be fully in-person. There will be no remote options.
The current policy on the Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) campus is that anyone who is not COVID-vaccinated is required to wear a well-fitting mask. For vaccinated people, masks are optional.

DAILY SCHEDULE:
(See email for schedule)
There are no early-release days and no block schedules.
CALENDAR:
This WANIC program follows the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) calendar. We expect all students to attend class on all LWSD school days even if these are non-school days at your home high school. Download the calendar to see the dates of our breaks and non-school days.
Note these two exceptions:
· Wednesdays are not early release days – we follow a full daily schedule on Wednesdays.
· There is no school on Wednesday November 23rd.
We recommend you print/save the LWSD calendar to refer to when planning vacations.
LWSD:
All WANIC students and families are registered in LWSD for 2022-23 even if your home high school is in a different school district. For some of you this means you are a member of LWSD as well as your home school district.
LWSD may send communications over the summer. Please read these as they may contain useful information as well as instructions for verifying your student’s information in the LWSD Skyward system.
Parents/Guardians, please see these instructions for creating a LWSD Skyward Family Access Account. Log into your LWSD Skyward Family Account to verify your student’s information, track attendance, and check their WANIC grades.
In August we will send separate emails to students who are new to LWSD with instructions for setting up their own LWSD email and Skyward accounts.
FEES:
There are no class fees.
SCRUBS:
Each student is required to purchase at least one set of Black scrubs (top and bottom). These are to be worn to every class, including the first day if possible (see below). You may purchase any style you like or use this Amazon.com link for a unisex scrubs set that is reasonably priced and suitable for this program. Be sure to select the Black color and a size that is comfortable and sufficiently roomy for dental lab activities.
You must be able to stretch without the top riding too far up, bend without the bottoms pulling too far down at the waist, and move freely without them pulling too tight to restrict motion. If you are unsure, please email your instructor for clear guidelines.
If you have any trouble locating the scrubs, please let us know. While we would like you to wear them on the first day, don’t worry if you are not able to get them in time. We’ll be happy to help you once classes begin.
OTHER SUPPLIES:
Your instructor will inform you if there are other specific supplies that need to be purchased for this class.
On the first day bring something to write on (notepad), something to write with (pens, pencils), and anything else that helps you in your coursework.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:
Students may qualify for financial support (barrier reduction BR funds) if they are eligible for the Free/Reduced Lunch program at their home high school or other funding program. These BR funds may be used to pay for a bus pass or gas card and to cover some or all approved purchases, such as scrubs. Click here for more information and to apply.
If you intend to apply for financial assistance, please retain all your receipts.
More details will be sent in the August email.
DRESS CODE:
You are required to wear your scrubs to every class. Your instructor will inform you about other dress code regulations for the lab, such as footwear. In addition, the general LWSD dress code applies (specific details will be provided in the August email).
ATTENDANCE:
· Full daily attendance is very important. Students are expected to be in class every day, on time, and ready to learn. Even when an absence is excused, many skills are learned and practiced during classroom/lab time and cannot be re-created following an absence.
· The attendance policy is described on the WANIC website HERE. Pay careful attention to what constitutes an excused absence and pre-arranging an absence.
· If an absence is excused, the instructor may extend assignment due dates or provide alternate projects to make up a missed grade. If an absence is not excused, instructors are not required to provide assignment/grade make-up options.
· If a student is chronically absent the WANIC Director may determine that additional absences will adversely impact their educational progress. Further absences will not be considered excused until a conference is held to develop a plan to support the student and the student is complying with the plan.
· Parents/guardians must email wanic@lwsd.org or call in to the WANIC office (425) 739-8400 to excuse your student within 48 hours of an absence. After 48 hours, the absence will remain unexcused.
· Please indicate the student’s full name and a reason for the absence. Until a reason is provided, the absence will remain unexcused. It is customary to inform the teacher of absences as well, but in order to record and excuse the absence, the WANIC office must hear from a parent/guardian directly. Note: Parent/guardian calls or emails to the student’s home high school do not reach WANIC – you must contact WANIC directly.
HEALTH CONCERNS:
If your student has a serious medical condition (such as seizures, asthma, diabetes, cardiac condition, or allergy requiring epinephrine) or other significant medical or behavioral condition, you must inform the WANIC office immediately.
If the student requires (or may require) medication during WANIC school hours, the student is required to have a signed Medication Administration Authorization form for each medication, and the medication must be brought by the parent/guardian to the WANIC office ON or BEFORE the first day of school. If these are not received, we will call you to pick up your student immediately.
There are three Authorization to Administer Medication forms depending on the type of medication needed. Click here to download the form(s), as needed. Please print the correct form (one for each medication) and take it to your student’s medical provider to be completed and signed.
For more information see the Medication at School page on the LWSD website here. For any questions/concerns regarding your student’s health, forms, or medications, contact the WANIC office right away.

No student will be allowed on site unless they have received confirmation from DigiPen that they are approved to come onto the campus.
For information on COVID-19 vaccinations for children and teens, see https://kingcounty.gov/depts/health/covid-19/vaccine/youth.aspx
As we receive updated guidelines from DigiPen, the school district, or OSPI we’ll email these to you.

FIRST DAY:
The first day of school is Tuesday, September 6th.
Students, go to the front desk at DigiPen where someone will meet you and direct you to your classroom.
Your instructor will help you set up your computer login, building access cards, parking passes, and anything else needed for the program.
On the first day bring something to write on (notepad), something to write with (pens, pencils), and anything else that helps you in your coursework.
DAILY SCHEDULE:
(Please see email for schedule.)
SUPPLIES:
Your instructor will inform you if there are specific supplies that need to be purchased for this class.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:
Students may qualify for financial support (barrier reduction BR funds) if they are eligible for the Free/Reduced Lunch program at their home high school or other funding program. These BR funds may be used to pay for a bus pass or gas card and to cover some or all approved purchases.
Click here for more information and to apply.
If you intend to apply for financial assistance, please retain all your receipts.
More details will be sent in the August email.
DRESS CODE:
LWSD dress code applies (specific details will be provided in the August email).
If the student requires (or may require) medication during WANIC school hours, the student is required to have a signed Medication Administration Authorization form for each medication, and the medication must be brought by the parent/guardian to the DigiPen office ON or BEFORE the first day of school.
CONTACT INFORMATION:
WANIC mostly uses email to communicate with students and families. Check your junk/SPAM folders frequently and add wanic@lwsd.org and wanic@digipen.edu as contacts so our emails reach your inbox.
If your student’s or family’s contact details change, let us know right away so we have the most updated information on record to be sure you receive all necessary communications from us.
That’s it for now. We’re so excited about this class and we’re very happy you’ll be joining us on Tuesday September 6th!
Watch for another email from us in late August with specific class details, first day instructions, and other valuable information.
