One of the primary goals of WANIC Skill Center is to prepare students for post-secondary education or a rewarding career in any field. We value, model, and teach skills that help students become successful, respected, and confident members of society during high school and beyond. The WANIC Way complements teachers’ classroom practices and policies to support this mission.

We call this the WANIC Way.

The WANIC Way

All classes meet daily, Mondays through Fridays.

Classes scheduled at WANIC Skill Center on Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) campus are
7:15-9:45 am and 12:00-2:30 pm

Classes scheduled on DigiPen Institute of Technology campus are 7:15-9:45 am and 12:30-3:00 pm.

Computer Code of Conduct

These specific computer-use requirements are always in effect:

• Be ethical and courteous. Do not send hate, harassing, or obscene mail, text or images; libelous, scandalous or discriminatory remarks; or demonstrate other antisocial behaviors. Such communications may be subject to school discipline, legal action, and/or police contact.
• While actively engaging in the class, use the time for educational purposes only. No personal, commercial or political activity is allowed.
• Use instructional tools for school purposes only.
• Do not use other devices during presentations or group discussions.
• Protect your account and computing privileges. Never share your logon and password information with other students. Never use others’ logon or password.
• Do your own work. Only submit original work and do not plagiarize the work of others. Academic dishonesty/misconduct (such as unauthorized use of AI, plagiarism, or cheating) is taken very seriously and may lead to the removal of the student from the program and/or result in a No Pass “N” on the student’s permanent high school transcript.
• Students may not photograph, video, livestream, or audio record another student, staff member, classroom, lab, project, or activity without explicit permission from the teacher AND the individuals being recorded
• This expectation applies to all devices, including cell phones, laptops, tablets, smartwatches, smart glasses, wearable cameras, and other recording technology.
• Taking, altering, sharing, posting, or threatening to distribute an image, video, or recording without permission — particularly content intended to embarrass, intimidate, threaten, bully, or harass another person — is a serious violation of WANIC expectations and will result in immediate disciplinary action.

Student cell phones and personal electronic devices must be put away and not used during class time unless permitted by the teacher for a specific academic purpose.

These expectations apply to ALL students while attending a WANIC program, regardless of the personal device rules at their home high school

During Class: Personal Devices Away

During all instructional time, personal electronic devices must be silenced, not visible, and not in use.

This includes:

• Cell phones
• Smartwatches
• Earbuds/headphones connected to personal devices
• Personal laptops and tablets
• Smart glasses and other wearable technology
• Handheld gaming devices
• Any other personal device capable of communication, internet access, or audio, video, or image capture

EXCEPTIONS

Personal device use during instructional time is permitted when:

• Required by an approved IEP, 504 Plan, Individual Health Plan, or other documented accommodation
• Authorized by WANIC staff for an unusual or time-sensitive circumstance
• Specifically authorized for an instructional purpose
• Emergency: Students may bring phones during an emergency or evacuation

Note: Permission for a specific use does not constitute permission for continued personal device use.

WHEN A STUDENT DOES NOT FOLLOW THE EXPECTATION

The expectation is clear, consistent, and applies to everyone. When a staff member directs a student to put away or store a device, the student is expected to comply without argument or disruption to instruction.

Initial Response:

• Teacher reminds/reteaches the expectation and directs the student to store the device.
• If the behavior continues, the teacher contacts the guardian.

Continued or Repeated Concerns:

• Teacher refers the concern to the WANIC Dean of Students or Director.
• WANIC administration follows up with the student and guardian.
• The device may be required to remain safely stored in the WANIC office for the remainder of the class/day.
• Repeated violations may require guardian pickup of the device, loss of the privilege of bringing the personal device to WANIC, and/or other appropriate administrative action.

Refusal to follow a staff direction regarding a personal device becomes a behavior concern separate from the device itself and will be addressed accordingly.

Students bring personal electronic devices to WANIC at their own risk. WANIC and LWSD are not responsible for loss, theft, or damage to personal devices.

**Families are asked to avoid calling or texting students during WANIC class time. For urgent needs, please contact the WANIC Main Office.

At WANIC, students are expected to attend class every day, just as employees are expected to show up for work. Regular attendance and active participation help students learn important skills and get the most out of their program.

Many WANIC programs include hands-on training that cannot be made up outside of class. Students develop skills through practice and participation, so being present is essential for success.

Guardians and students share responsibility for monitoring attendance and addressing any attendance concerns as soon as possible.

Each instructor has specific attendance expectations for their program. Please review the course syllabus for details.

Remote learning is not available for students who miss class for any reason.

WORKPLACE EXPECTATIONS

WANIC helps students develop habits that employers value:

• Be dependable: Attend school every day.
• Be on time: Arrive promptly and be ready to work.
• Complete a full day's work: Stay engaged, complete assignments, and clean up materials before leaving.

WANIC Attendance Policy

REPORTING AN ABSENCE

A guardian must report any absence to the WANIC office within 48 hours of the missed class.

There are four ways to report an absence:

1. Email: wanic@lwsd.org
2. Call: 425-739-8400 (voicemail available 24 hours a day)
3. Submit an absence request through the LWSD Skyward Attendance module
4. Send a signed written note directly to the WANIC office

All absence reports must include:

• Student's full name
• Date of absence
• Detailed reason for the absence

Absence information must be sent directly to the WANIC office. Until a valid reason is provided, the absence will be recorded as unexcused.

A doctor's note or other medical verification may be required if a student has excessive absences.

Students are responsible for making sure their guardian reports absences on time.

You are welcome to inform the teacher about an absence, but the WANIC office must receive the notification directly from guardian. Teachers are not responsible for passing attendance messages to the office.

An absence may not be excused if it seriously affects a student's educational progress.

If a student has many absences, the principal may determine that additional absences are negatively affecting the student's learning. In that case, future absences may not be excused until a meeting is held and an attendance support plan is created and followed.

TARDINESS

Students are expected to arrive to class on time and ready to learn.

If a student is frequently late or causes disruptions because of tardiness, corrective action may be taken.

ABSENCES AND TARDIES

Students missing 30 minutes or more of class time will be recorded as Absent for the whole period. They will need to make up missed work in the same way they would if they were absent for the whole period. As with any absence, a guardian needs to contact the WANIC office with a valid reason for the missed class time in order to update the record to an Excused Absence.

Students should have their daily routines and schedules established to avoid late arrivals. Sleeping in or getting gas are not considered valid excuses for arriving late. Please help your students plan accordingly.

We understand that some appointments must take place during school hours. Remember, missing one WANIC class is similar to missing three days of a regular high school class.

If an appointment occurs during class time, students should aim to attend as much of class as possible. Arriving late or leaving early is better than missing the entire class.

Activities such as lectures, lab training, and group projects often cannot be made up after an absence.

Students with frequent absences due to medical appointments may be asked to provide a note from a healthcare provider.

If it is unavoidable that your student will be missing three or more school days, you must complete the Pre-Arranged Absence Form at least one week prior to the absence. 

The form requires approval from both:

1. The instructor
2. The WANIC Director

Approval will be based on factors such as:

• Current grades
• Attendance history
• The impact the absence may have on academic progress

Teachers are not required to provide classwork or assignments in advance of an absence.

Students may not leave class early on their own.

Any early dismissal must be arranged ahead of time through the guardian and the WANIC office.

Late notice can be disruptive to teachers and classmates. While emergencies happen, families should notify the WANIC office as early as possible.

Early Dismissal Notification Requirements

• Please provide at least two hours' notice when calling or emailing about an early dismissal.
• This allows staff enough time to notify the student and the teacher.
• If less than two hour's notice is provided, we cannot guarantee that the student will be notified before dismissal time.

Do not use Skyward to report early dismissals or tardies. Skyward is not monitored regularly for those requests.

We require students and parents/guardians to be vigilant to the student’s health. Keeping students home when they are too sick for school protects other students and staff from any potential illness.

NOTE: If the student has allergies, they are required to manage symptoms before coming to school.

WANIC grades are assigned quarterly, and grade reports are forwarded to each home high school at the end of each semester.

Students may receive up to three high school credits per year.

Grading categories include at a minimum, but not limited to the following areas:

• Employability: Demonstrated employability, punctuality and participation, overall quality of work, attitude and conduct, adherence to safety rules, and leadership.
• Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of related theory, test scores, and written work.
• Skills: Demonstrated application of related theory and attainment of identified competencies.

Students and parents/guardians are given access to view their grades and attendance online through LWSD Skyward Family Access.

The WANIC team supports every student toward successful completion of the full academic year. The competencies within a skill center course build upon one another progressively. If a student is earning a D or N (No Pass) toward the end of Semester 1, this indicates they are not attaining these standards and skills with adequate proficiency. WANIC will review their academic performance, attendance records, and other contributing factors. To avoid further negative effect on the student’s grade/GPA, WANIC and the student’s home high school team may determine it is in the student’s best interest to withdraw from the program and return to their home high school for the remainder of the school year.

If a student withdraws before the first day of class, the course will not be reflected on their official high school transcript.

If the student attends the class and withdraws during the first 10 school days of the semester, the class will be included on their transcript with a mark/grade of “W” (Withdraw). “W” does not impact the student’s GPA.

If the student withdraws after the first 10 school days, the mark/grade of “N” (No Pass) is used. The WANIC Director may consider special circumstances for issuing a “W” mark/grade after the 10 school day window has passed.

The WANIC office and instructors use ParentSquare to communicate with families. You may receive notifications as text messages and/or email messages. You may set preferences for format and frequency of messages. For more information see: https://www.lwsd.org/help/parentsquare.

If you disable notifications, you will miss important information such as calendar changes. Absences due to unawareness of WANIC’s schedule is not considered an excused absence.

Regardless of the student’s home high school, all WANIC families are members of Lake Washington School District (LWSD). Parents/Guardians and Students will receive regular LWSD-specific communications via ParentSquare. Please read all these communications. Some content may not be relevant to you as a WANIC family, but some content will be important and may require action.

WANIC office and teaching staff conduct monthly emergency drills with students.

There are emergency supplies in each classroom and lab. AED and Narcan are accessible. WANIC follows emergency procedures set by LWSD and well as by LWTech and DigiPen.

In the event of a power outage, computer and phone lines will be unavailable. It may take several hours for the WANIC office to restore access. Office staff will communicate important information with families as soon as possible.

The primary form of communication is ParentSquare. Please be sure the WANIC office has your most current email addresses and phone numbers on record.

Emergency Closures

In the event of inclement weather or emergencies, ParentSquare and flashalert.net will announce school cancellations, delays, and early dismissals. WANIC Skill Center will be delayed/closed in conjunction with the Lake Washington School District. If LWTech or DigiPen are closed, independently, WANIC classes held on those specific campuses will also be cancelled.

We recommend signing up for flashalert.net to receive notifications specifically for LWSD, LWTech, or DigiPen. In addition, LWTech announces localized campus closures or emergency information via Omnilert. Families with students attending at LWTech, are also encouraged to sign up with Omnilert. Link and information can be found HERE.

On-the-job safety is a vital part of all occupations and is a part of each program at WANIC. Everyone is expected to demonstrate safe work habits. WANIC reserves the right to search the following but not limited to lockers, backpacks and vehicles that are on campus and at school-related events if reasonable suspicion exists. Safety violations are subject to strict discipline, including possible dismissal from a program. The following safety regulations, adopted from industry standards found on the job, are to be observed at all times:

1. Safety Rules: Students are expected to know, understand and follow safety rules as well as maintain an orderly and clean work area. Individual program safety rules are posted and must be followed.
2. Eye Safety:  If a student is involved in a program of a hazardous nature WISHA code clearly states individuals must wear appropriate industry-quality eye protective devices as designated.
3. Handling Blood/Body Fluid: Gloves (available in each classroom) must be worn if contact with blood or other body fluid is possible.
4. Food-Borne Illness: Care must be taken in program activities involving the handling of food in an effort to prevent food-borne illness from occurring.
5. Fire Drills and Emergency Procedures: Plans have been developed that will ensure the maximum efficiency and safety for evacuating the building during fires or other emergencies. Drills are to be taken seriously. Instructions will be posted for students in each room. Teachers will discuss the instructions periodically with the students.
6. Closed Campus: WANIC, as well as any program associated with, but not located on, the main campus, is considered closed. Closed campus directly refers to a student’s ability to leave campus prior to regular dismissal time. Once a student has arrived at WANIC they are expected to remain on campus for the full duration of their session unless they have received prior approval from the WANIC office. Students who need to leave campus prior to regular dismissal time will need to follow established checkout procedures with the front office that includes verifiable parent/guardian contact. Students who choose to violate the closed campus policy may be subject to disciplinary action as deemed appropriate by WANIC administration.
7. For LWTech location only: Unlike many public high schools, the LWTech campus is open to the public. The entrances are not locked or monitored. There are security cameras in many locations, however, these are not being constantly monitored. WANIC does not provide supervision of students before or after class time hours.
8. For DigiPen location only: campus doors are locked and monitored during school hours.)

If you have information about a threat to our school community such as threats of violence, weapons, sexual harassment, drugs, or harassment, intimidation and bullying, you may submit an anonymous report with Lake Washington School District Tip Line. Use District Code 1342.

GENERAL CLASSROOM VISITORS (PROGRAM RELATED)

Classroom visitors are permitted when the visit supports the instructional program and is planned in advance. Visits may occur only when:

• The visit is directly connected to the instructional program (e.g., guest speaker, industry mentor, employer partner), and
• The visit is initiated or approved by the instructor or program administrator, and
• The visitor has completed all required check-in and identification procedures, including sign-in and issuance of a visitor badge.

All visitors must be pre-approved by school staff and follow established visitor protocols. Visitors are limited to approved areas and may not access classrooms or students without authorization.

STUDENT-INITIATED VISITORS TO CLASSROOMS

Students may not independently invite or host guests in classrooms during instructional time.

Exceptions may be granted only when:

• The visit meets the criteria for a program-related classroom visitor (above), and
• The visit is explicitly approved in advance by the instructor or program administrator.

Unscheduled or social visits (e.g., friends or acquaintances visiting during class time) are not permitted.

GUARDIANS AND OTHER VISITORS

Guardians and other visitors must coordinate through the main office and may not enter classrooms without prior approval. Direct classroom access during instructional time is generally not permitted unless pre-arranged and approved.

AUTHORITY AND EXPECTATIONS

WANIC reserves the right to deny, limit, or terminate any visit that may:

• Disrupt instruction.
• Compromise safety or security.
• Interfere with student privacy.

Students are responsible for the proper care of all school property including but not limited to books, supplies, technology and furniture. Anyone who damages or loses property or equipment will be required to pay for the item to be repaired or replaced. Anyone misusing or abusing school property will be subject to disciplinary action.

Students must take care to protect WANIC laptops and other program equipment from any damage. Food and beverages are not permitted near laptops or equipment. Drinks must remain in sealed containers and be stored away from all technology. Students must ensure their hands are clean and free of sticky or oily residue before using laptops or other equipment.

WANIC will help students to develop and reinforce self-control, orderliness, respect, academic honesty, and efficiency necessary to maintain a positive attitude, self-discipline, and overall effectiveness as a future employee.
Each staff member at WANIC is committed to proactive involvement with students by anticipating needs and always treating individuals fairly, openly, and honestly. If disciplinary action is warranted this will result in referral to the student’s sending high school for disciplinary measures.

Bullying will not be tolerated. If your student reports being bullied in a WANIC class, please contact us as soon as possible. Share any relevant details with your student's teacher or administrator so we can investigate and respond appropriately. We are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all students and take reports of bullying seriously.

Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Section 504 Accommodation Plans are designed for students with specific learning, behavior, or health needs. Once determined eligible, students may receive support and/or accommodations in the classroom setting. All necessary determinations of individuals who qualify for such services as well as any supports or accommodations deemed necessary are the responsibility of the student’s sending high school. Students with Individual Education Plans or Section 504 Accommodation Plans must remain enrolled in a sending high school in order to continue receiving special services support while attending WANIC. Personal items should never be left unattended in any program area. WANIC is not responsible for loss of personal items.

Any person who finds an item should bring it to the office. If an item has been lost, check in the office to see if it has been turned in.

Dress code standards at WANIC are established to connect to the expectations of an employment setting. Therefore, several standards acceptable at the comprehensive high school level may not be deemed acceptable by WANIC employability standards. A good general policy regarding the dress code is: If there is any question about an item being inappropriate in an employment setting, don’t wear it.

Inappropriate dress includes but is not limited to: Dressing in a manner that is not conducive to the educational/employment environment. A student’s dress or appearance may not present a health or safety hazard or create material and substantial disruption of the educational process at the school. Student dress shall not be gang related, nor may it promote illegal activities or activities that violate school regulations.

If the WANIC instructor allows students to occasionally dress up, any costumes worn must not violate the dress code for WANIC students. Costume masks, toy weapons, large props, and gore are not allowed.

WANIC instructors will provide dress code regulations specific to each program.

Protective clothing as defined by Washington Industrial Safety & Health Administration (WISHA) may be required.

When on site, everyone must wear shoes at all times.

If the student’s dress or grooming is deemed unprofessional, the principal/designee shall request the student make appropriate corrections. If the student refuses, the principal/designee shall notify the guardian and request assistance in guiding the student to make the necessary correction. If both the student and guardian refuse, the principal/designee shall take appropriate corrective action. All students shall be accorded due process safeguards before any corrective action may be taken.

Students provide their own transportation.

Students who are authorized to drive to and from any WANIC campus must know and observe the following regulations:

• Student vehicles are to be parked in designated spaces only. Vehicles must occupy only one parking space. Cars parked in unauthorized areas may be ticketed (fined) or towed.
• Handicapped parking is available.
• Student parking must comply with city fire codes; do not block fire lanes around the building.
• Follow the posted speed and stop signs on campus at all times. Speeding or careless driving on campus grounds or on streets bordering the campus or at off-campus sites may cause loss of driving privileges and/or further disciplinary actions, including a ticket (fine).
• Drivers are responsible for keeping all litter contained in your vehicle. Littering is not permitted on any WANIC campus including the parking lot, the street bordering the campus, or at any off-campus sites.
• Music must be at a level that will not be disruptive to the educational process. Music should not be able to be heard outside of the student’s vehicle.
• The parking lot is considered off limits during session hours. Students must gain permission from a staff member prior to going out to the parking lot for any reason during session.
• Drivers shall, at all times, yield the right of way to school busses and pedestrians.

DIGIPEN LOCATION

DigiPen will communicate to students who drive to and from DigiPen will receive a parking pass from them.

Failure to follow the above stated rules may result in the termination of driving/parking privileges and/or further disciplinary action, including a ticket (fine).

LWTECH LOCATION

If you’re in a vehicle accident on LWTech property:

1. Safety first: Move to a safe place, check for injuries, and call 911 for medical needs.
2. Call Campus Public Safety (CPS) immediately 425-739-8224. Stay on the scene. CPS will respond, document the incident, help you exchange information, and guide next steps.
3. Exchange information (all drivers, including minors). Provide your name, address, driver’s license, vehicle plate/VIN, and proof of insurance to the other driver, and show your license on request. Do not leave without exchanging.
4. Report thresholds and timelines. 

A. Immediately report to CPS if anyone is injured or property damage appears to be $500 or more.

B. If police do not take a report at the scene, drivers must file the Washington State Patrol online collision report within 4 days when there is any injury or when total damage appears to be $1,000 or more.

5. Students under 18 are still required to exchange information and provide basic facts about what happened. A guardian does not have to be present for CPS to take an administrative accident report. If a situation becomes a criminal or custodial investigation, law enforcement will handle youth rights and attorney access.

6. Have ready: Driver’s license, registration, and insurance; photos of both vehicles and the scene; names of any witnesses. Ask CPS for the incident number.

7. Video and records. CPS does not release CCTV video directly to guardians or students. Records, including video, must be requested through the public records process. CPS coordinates with law enforcement during active investigations.

8. Drive carefully on campus. The campus speed limit is 10 mph. Be extra careful during arrival and dismissal, and follow staff directions in the lots.

High schools should give students a transit period in which to get to WANIC/back to their school safely and also have enough time for lunch. We understand there are sometimes challenges with limited time to eat lunch and get to their WANIC PM sessions on time. We recommend students consider packing a lunch in the morning in order to save time.

WANIC WILL NOT MANAGE FOOD DELIVERY SERVICES

Students should not have food or other deliveries made to the WANIC or DigiPen campuses during academic class time. Students will not be excused from class to meet delivery drivers or accept food. School staff will not accept student deliveries (Uber Eats, Door Dash, etc.). WANIC Skill Center is not responsible for any food that is delivered.

Parents/guardians have the primary responsibility for a student’s health. WANIC does not have a full-time on-site school nurse or health room, so anyone who is too ill to be in class needs to identify an emergency contact person who is available for transportation home if the need arises.

The opportunity may arise for WANIC students to be photographed or videoed for the purpose of celebrating achievements and promoting students and programs. These photos/videos may be used online or in print materials related to WANIC or LWSD communications.

If a parent/guardian does not want their student to be included in any of these photographs or videos, the parent/guardian must opt out by emailing WANIC at wanic@lwsd.org to let us know and we will add your student to the Do-Not-Photo/Video list. Include the student’s full name in this email.

Most WANIC programs offer Dual Credit (students can earn both high school AND college credit).

Note: WANIC classes are not college classes. They are high school classes. Students earn high school credits. They may also qualify for Dual Credit college credits if they satisfy certain requirements.

Students are responsible for speaking with their instructor to determine the requirements for qualifying for Dual Credit college credits. Different programs have different requirements. For example, students may need to earn a B or better (in both semesters) or they may need to maintain a positive attendance rate of 90% or higher.

Students and families are responsible for registering for Dual Credit, paying the fee (if applicable), and following the steps to procure college credit transcripts. Different programs have different procedures.

WANIC leadership activities exist to give all students an opportunity to develop a sense of belonging, greater school pride, leadership skills, a sense of accomplish­ment, and a commitment to their community. WANIC endorses, encourages, and supports leadership activities as part of training. In accor­dance with Washington State standards for vocational education, a leadership component shall be integrated into each program curriculum. This may be accomplished through Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) such as HOSA, TSA, Skills USA, ProStart, or through a locally devel­oped leadership program, such as Explorers.
