Kari Schuh

Kari Schuh WANIC Skill Center Director.

Kari is a dedicated educator with a wealth of knowledge and passion for student success. She is committed to changing the lives of students by helping to provide educational opportunities that are relevant, real world, engaging, and hands on.  Since 2016, she has served as the Director of Career and Technical Education at Riverview School District.  Prior to this, Kari served in a variety of roles ranging from classroom teacher to the Director of Special Education and Career and Technical Education for the Orcas Island School District.

Kari is currently working on her Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership through Washington State University. She also holds a Principal Certification through Seattle Pacific University, a Master’s degree from Central Washington University in Career and Technical Education Administration, and a Library Media Specialist and Bachelor's degree in Psychology from University of Washington.  Kari is active in several community organizations and serves in leadership roles at both the local and state levels.


Steve Hynden Dean of Students

Steve Hynden WANIC Dean of Students

Steve comes to the Dean of Students role after 25 years as a school counselor in the Lake Washington School District at the middle school level, in addition to prior classroom teaching experience in both history and English.  He obtained both undergraduate and graduate degrees at Seattle Pacific University.  And acquired National Board Certification in School Counseling (2007 and renewal in 2017). 

Steve considers the role at WANIC as a natural continuation in his career of service to students, staff, parents and the community, resonating with his passion to directly support students in their learning process along career pathways toward future success in high school and beyond.  

Beyond the workspace, Steve enjoys time with his family: wife, Juli (an elementary teacher in the LWSD); daughter Melanie (a middle school math teacher in the LWSD); and son, Karl (recent college graduate with mechanical engineering degree).  Steve enjoys music, time outdoors, bicycling, hiking, fly-fishing and cheering on the Seattle Sounders!

Barb Beck Special Services Program Coordinator

Barb has been teaching in secondary special education for over 26 years with an emphasis in adult transition services for students ages 18-21.  Her degrees in Speech/Language Pathology and Special Education - Deaf/Hard of Hearing have enabled her to engage students and their families in providing positive post-school outcomes. After graduating from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, Barb had her start in Portland Public Schools and has spent most of her career in the Northshore School District working in Secondary Special Services.

Barb states that her greatest passion is supporting student in identifying their own personal strengths and seeing the unique gifts that they bring to their communities and chosen career pathways.  She is committed to supporting all students but particularly those with accommodations and their families in developing their self-determination leading toward positive post-school outcomes.
